The short answer

Our verdict

Topstep is a real, long-operating futures prop firm. It has been operating since July 2012, carries an A- letter grade on its Better Business Bureau profile, and publishes its payout policy openly, so the basic legitimacy question is settled. The live question for 2026 is narrower: whether platform reliability and payout economics have recovered from a documented run of outages, a data exposure disclosure, and a reduction in Express account payout caps.

Reviewed 17 Oct 2026

Is it right for you?

Topstep suits a trader who wants CME futures specifically, values a long operating history and a published rulebook, and can trade around an end-of-day trailing drawdown without needing to hold large unrealized swings. It suits people who intend to withdraw steadily rather than compound one account toward a single very large payout. It is a poor fit for traders who need instruments outside futures, for anyone who cannot tolerate the possibility of a platform interruption during an open position after the 2025 record, and for high-frequency withdrawal patterns, since each payout request restarts the winning-day count and Express accounts carry per-request caps. It is also a poor fit for anyone whose plan depends on the post-first-payout buffer staying generous, because it does not.

Track record

What the public record shows, from dated trade-press, company and regulator sources. Open any item to read it.

  1. The track record: operating since July 2012, with an A- BBB grade

Topstep's business started on 12 July 2012 according to its Better Business Bureau profile. That profile, checked on 5 August 2026, shows a letter grade of A- and 114 complaints filed against the business, with the BBB file opened on 25 July 2019. It is not BBB-accredited. What the profile establishes is that Topstep is a real, findable United States business with a paper trail, which is the first thing anyone typing the word scam into a search box is actually asking about.

  2. What actually happened during the late-2025 TopstepX outages

Between October and December 2025, TopstepX, the firm's own trading platform, went down eleven separate times. Finance Magnates reported the figure on 23 December 2025, and Topstep acknowledged the outages rather than disputing them. The effect on open positions is what turned an inconvenience into a trust event: traders reported being unable to close trades while the platform was unreachable, and some had accounts liquidated as a result. In a business whose entire product is a set of loss limits, an outage is not a neutral service interruption: it can convert a manageable open trade into a rule breach the trader had no way to prevent. The same reporting placed Topstep's Trustpilot score at 3.6 at that time, with sixteen percent one-star reviews and a four percent response rate to negative reviews. Founder and CEO Michael Patak addressed the cluster on Discord, conceding that the company was not delivering what he called the Ultimate Trading Experience, and committed to fixes by January 2026.

  3. The apology, and why traders rejected it

Investomania covered the reaction on 19 December 2025, and it was not kind. One characterization quoted in that coverage called the response a classic nothing burger. The objection was specific: the apology carried commitments about future engineering work, but no refunds and no fee credits. Traders were not asking to be apologized to. They were asking to be made whole. The argument against blanket compensation is worth stating plainly. Blanket compensation for an outage requires a firm to adjudicate counterfactuals, deciding what each open position would have done had the platform stayed up, and every one of those judgments is contestable in the trader's favor by construction. What the record shows is that Topstep chose engineering commitments over compensation, that a vocal share of its customers found that inadequate, and that its low response rate to negative reviews at the time made the position read as indifference.

  4. The January 2026 data exposure, and the distinction Topstep drew

On 5 January 2026 Finance Magnates reported that Topstep had written to affected users about a data exposure involving names and social security numbers. The timeline matters: the exposure window ran from 8 September to 16 October 2025, the company discovered it internally on 3 December 2025, and notification letters went out in early January 2026, roughly a month after discovery and close to three months after the window closed. Topstep's initial letter connected the incident to a denial-of-service attack. It later clarified on X that its own systems were not breached, and that the exposure came from users reusing passwords compromised on other sites, a pattern known as credential stuffing. Free credit monitoring was offered; the number affected was described only as a small number. The credential-stuffing distinction is genuine: if the vector was reused passwords, much of the remedy sits with the user, and a firm cannot fix a password a customer reused somewhere else.

  5. Payout mechanics as Topstep publishes them

The profit split in Topstep's help-center payout policy, read on 5 August 2026, is 90/10 in the trader's favor. Dashboard accounts created before 12 January 2026 keep a legacy arrangement: one hundred percent of the first ten thousand dollars in lifetime profit before the split begins. The minimum payout request is one hundred and twenty-five dollars. Express Funded Accounts carry per-request caps: two to three thousand dollars on a fifty thousand dollar account, three to four thousand on a hundred thousand dollar account, and five to six thousand on a hundred and fifty thousand dollar account. Live Funded Account payouts are uncapped. Requests are accepted only during CME hours, Sunday 5pm to Friday 5pm Central time, and processing runs from same day to ten business days depending on method. One clause is easy to miss: submitting a payout request restarts the account's winning-day count, so how often you withdraw changes how soon the next withdrawal becomes available. Taken together, that policy sets out the split, the minimum, the caps, the request window and the winning-day rule in one document, which lets a trader model payout economics before buying rather than after.

  6. The April 2026 cap cut, and what can and cannot be said about it

Several community and review sites, among them tradecovex.com, checked on 5 August 2026, report a rule change dated 28 April 2026 that reduced Express account per-cycle payout caps by roughly fifty to sixty percent, with pre-existing combines grandfathered at the older limits. The caps currently published on Topstep's own policy page are consistent with a reduction having happened, but the magnitude is not independently confirmed. The before figure comes only from secondary sites rather than an archived copy of Topstep's own page, so the specific claim that a fifty thousand dollar account's cap fell from around five thousand dollars to two thousand should be treated as reported rather than established. The reduction landed in the same twelve-month window as the outages and the exposure disclosure, but no source located connects them causally, and no such link is asserted here. Two things happening near each other is a timeline, not a motive. Practically: check the current caps against the account size you intend to buy, because a figure quoted in a review last year may not apply to a combine started today.

  7. The trailing drawdown, and the buffer reset after a first payout

Topstep uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown, described consistently across review sources including propfirmproof.com. The maximum loss limit trails the highest end-of-day balance rather than the intraday peak, and it locks once the profit target is reached. Firms use trailing drawdowns for a defensible reason: it stops a trader from building a large unrealized gain and handing all of it back, protecting the firm's capital and the trader's account at once, and it filters out passes that rest on one lucky position rather than a repeatable process. The friction is that the limit is measured against live equity, so an open position moving against you can breach the account on unrealized losses that never close as a realized trade. The second mechanic catches people after success: once a trader takes a first payout, the buffer above the loss limit resets toward zero and the remaining balance becomes the entire cushion, a recurring complaint theme across sources. A reset of this kind reflects that withdrawn cash is no longer risk capital the firm holds, but the effect is that the account is most fragile right after the trader's first win.

  8. What a working Topstep account looks like

The outage story is the newsworthy part, but it is not the whole record. A firsthand trader write-up published on 2 July 2025, before the outage cluster began, reports two payouts arriving on time and typically within two and a half business days, praises execution speed against retail broker fills, and details the tier used: a fifty dollar evaluation fee, a hundred and fifty dollar activation fee, a three thousand dollar profit target and a two thousand dollar maximum drawdown. A commenter on that post disputes the positive read, reporting an account closed over an alleged copy-trading rule violation and an appeal they did not consider fair. Both are single accounts, and neither is representative of the whole customer base.

  9. Signs of reinvestment: the April 2026 acquisition

On 1 April 2026 Topstep announced through a GlobeNewswire press release that it had acquired The Futures Desk, folding that company's trader-education technology and co-founders Josh Schwartzberg and Brian Ford into TopstepX. An acquisition is not evidence that a platform is stable. It is evidence that the company is still spending on the platform a few months after the outage cycle. Nothing in the public record establishes that TopstepX uptime is now fixed, because no independent uptime measurement was located. What can be said is that the January 2026 deadline the chief executive set has long passed, that no further outage reporting was located in this research, and that the firm has continued to invest rather than quietly contract. For a reader deciding in August 2026, that is the honest state of it: a documented failure, a rejected apology, a disclosed exposure, then visible reinvestment with no repeat incident located on the record.

Restricted countries

These are the lists of restricted countries the firm itself publishes, copied as printed on the date shown. A country that is not on a list is simply not named by the firm. That is not a statement that the firm accepts traders from it, so check the firm's own page before you pay.

Countries Ineligible to Trade (Topstep help centre: Am I Eligible to Trade with Topstep?)

The firm's list. Applies to: every programme.

34 entries as printed | Read 17 Oct 2026 | Source (opens in a new tab)

The firm's conditions: Citizens of these countries can't trade or receive payouts. Eligibility is based on both citizenship and permanent residency: residing in an ineligible country makes a person ineligible regardless of citizenship. A citizen of an ineligible country living in an eligible one may be able to trade (possibly) by submitting a government-issued photo ID proving permanent residency in the eligible country plus a bank statement from that country, reviewed by Topstep's Trust team. Trading from an ineligible country, even briefly while traveling, may trigger a review by the Trust team. Minimum age 18; no US citizenship required. The list can change at any time based on updates from brokerages and other circumstances. The Terms of Use also bar users located in, ordinarily resident in, or accessing from a country or region subject to comprehensive U.S. sanctions, and prohibit VPN or VPS use on accounts.

The firm's conditions: Traders from these countries can join Topstep, trade and pass the Trading Combine, earn Express Funded Accounts, and take up to $200,000 in total payouts. No Live Funded Account access (no call-up from an Express Funded Account regardless of performance; the Terms of Use, Section 30, say the funded account stays in a simulated environment for residents of a Live Restricted Jurisdiction). Select traders from these countries may be considered for the Pro Account track rather than the Live Funded Account, based on performance. Topstep gives the reason as brokerage restrictions. Questions and answers

Answers use only the dated facts on this page.

Is Topstep legit?
Yes, in the sense that matters for the question. Topstep is a Chicago business that started operating on 12 July 2012, holds an A- letter grade on its Better Business Bureau profile with 114 complaints on file, and publishes a detailed payout policy covering split, caps, minimums and processing times. The meaningful risks are not that the firm is fake, but that platform reliability failed publicly in late 2025 and that Express payout caps were, according to secondary reporting, reduced in 2026.
What happened with the Topstep outages in 2025?
Finance Magnates reported on 23 December 2025 that TopstepX had eleven confirmed platform outages between October and December 2025, acknowledged by the company. Traders reported being unable to close positions during downtime, and some accounts were liquidated as a result. Founder and chief executive Michael Patak addressed it on Discord and set a January 2026 deadline for fixes. No further outage reporting was located in this research, and no independent uptime data for the platform was located either way.
Was Topstep hacked?
Topstep says no. Finance Magnates reported on 5 January 2026 that the firm notified users of a data exposure affecting names and social security numbers, with a window from 8 September to 16 October 2025 discovered internally on 3 December 2025. The initial letter referenced a denial-of-service attack, but the company later clarified that its own systems were not breached and that the exposure came from users reusing passwords compromised on other sites, known as credential stuffing. Free credit monitoring was offered.
How long do Topstep payouts take?
Topstep's published payout policy states that processing runs from same day to ten business days depending on the method, with a minimum request of one hundred and twenty-five dollars and requests accepted only during CME hours, Sunday 5pm to Friday 5pm Central. One firsthand trader account published in July 2025 reported payouts typically arriving within about two and a half business days. Note that submitting a payout request restarts the account's winning-day count, so frequent withdrawals push out the date the next one becomes available.
Did Topstep cut its payout caps?
Multiple secondary review and community sites report a rule change dated 28 April 2026 that cut Express Funded Account per-cycle payout caps by roughly fifty to sixty percent, with existing combines grandfathered at the older limits. The current caps on Topstep's own help-center page are consistent with a reduction. The pre-change figures could not be confirmed against an archived copy of Topstep's own page, so the size of the cut should be treated as reported rather than established. Live Funded Account payouts remain uncapped.
How does the Topstep trailing drawdown work?
Topstep applies an end-of-day trailing drawdown: the maximum loss limit trails the highest end-of-day balance rather than the intraday peak, and it locks once the profit target is hit. The limit is still measured against live equity, so an open position can breach an account on unrealized losses that never close as a realized loss. After a first payout, the buffer above the loss limit resets toward zero, leaving the remaining balance as the entire cushion.
How much does Topstep cost?
from $49 per month ($0.98 per $1K, per month). These are list prices before discount codes, read from the firm's own pricing pages.
Does Topstep have a consistency rule?
Varies by programme. The rules by programme section shows each programme.
What kind of maximum loss limit does Topstep use?
Trailing (end of day). The rules by programme section shows the amount for each account size.
What profit split does Topstep offer?
Base profit split: 90%. Payout conditions are in the rules by programme section.
How does Topstep pay traders?
Payout methods: Other, Bank transfer, and Wise.
Which trading platforms does Topstep support?
TopstepX.
Which countries does Topstep restrict?
Countries Ineligible to Trade (Topstep help centre: Am I Eligible to Trade with Topstep?): 34 entries as printed, read 17 Oct 2026. Countries Eligible for an XFA, Not LFA (Express Funded Account but no Live Funded Account): 25 entries as printed, read 17 Oct 2026. A country missing from a list is not named by the firm; that is not a promise that the firm accepts traders from it.
Who operates Topstep?
According to its own pages: Topstep LLC (Delaware).

Track record sources

  1. TopstepX had eleven confirmed platform outages between October and December 2025, acknowledged by the company; traders reported being unable to close positions and some accounts were liquidated as a result.www.financemagnates.com/forex/topstep-faces-prop-traders-wrath-due-to-repeated-outages-ceo-sets-january-deadline-for-a-fix/ (opens in a new tab)23 Dec 2025
  2. Founder and CEO Michael Patak acknowledged the outages on Discord, stating that the company was not delivering the Ultimate Trading Experience, and committed to fixes by January 2026.www.financemagnates.com/forex/topstep-faces-prop-traders-wrath-due-to-repeated-outages-ceo-sets-january-deadline-for-a-fix/ (opens in a new tab)23 Dec 2025
  3. As reported by Finance Magnates on 23 December 2025, Topstep's Trustpilot score stood at 3.6 with sixteen percent one-star reviews and a four percent company response rate to negative reviews at that time. This figure was not read directly off Trustpilot and is not presented as independently verified.www.financemagnates.com/forex/topstep-faces-prop-traders-wrath-due-to-repeated-outages-ceo-sets-january-deadline-for-a-fix/ (opens in a new tab)23 Dec 2025
  4. Trader reaction to the CEO apology was sharply negative, characterized in coverage as a classic nothing burger, specifically because no refunds or fee credits were offered, only promises.www.investomania.co.uk/topsteps-apology-lands-flat-as-traders-demand-more/ (opens in a new tab)19 Dec 2025
  5. A data exposure incident ran from 8 September to 16 October 2025, was discovered internally on 3 December 2025, and was disclosed to affected users by letter in early January 2026. The letter initially referenced a DDoS attack; Topstep later clarified via X that its own systems were not breached and that the exposure resulted from users reusing passwords compromised on other sites. Free credit monitoring was offered and the number affected was described only as a small number.www.financemagnates.com/forex/topstep-users-names-and-social-security-numbers-exposed/ (opens in a new tab)5 Jan 2026
  6. Topstep's Better Business Bureau profile shows a letter grade of A-, no BBB accreditation, 114 complaints filed against the business, a business start date of 12 July 2012 and a BBB file opened on 25 July 2019.www.bbb.org/us/il/chicago/profile/financial-services/topstep-0654-90027944 (opens in a new tab)5 Aug 2026
  7. Topstep's published payout policy sets a 90/10 profit split, a $125 minimum payout, Express Funded Account per-request caps of $2,000-$3,000 (50K), $3,000-$4,000 (100K) and $5,000-$6,000 (150K), uncapped Live Funded Account payouts, requests accepted only during CME hours (Sun 5pm - Fri 5pm CT), processing from same day to ten business days, a legacy 100 percent of first $10,000 lifetime profit for dashboard accounts created before 12 January 2026, and a payout request that restarts the account's winning-day count.help.topstep.com/en/articles/8284233-topstep-payout-policy (opens in a new tab)5 Aug 2026
  8. Multiple secondary review and community sites report a rule change dated 28 April 2026 that cut Express per-cycle payout caps by roughly 50-60 percent, with pre-existing combines grandfathered at the older caps. The pre-change figures are secondary-sourced only.tradecovex.com/guides/topstep-payout-rules-2026 (opens in a new tab)5 Aug 2026
  9. Topstep uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown that trails the highest end-of-day balance and locks once the profit target is hit, but can still breach on unrealized open-position losses; after a trader's first payout the maximum loss limit buffer resets toward zero so the remaining balance becomes the entire cushion.propfirmproof.com/blog/topstep-review (opens in a new tab)5 Aug 2026
  10. A firsthand trader write-up reports two on-time Topstep payouts typically arriving within about 2.5 business days, praises execution speed against retail brokers, and describes a $50 evaluation fee and $150 funded-account activation fee tier with a $3,000 profit target and $2,000 maximum drawdown; a commenter on the same post disputes the positive account, reporting an account closure over an alleged copy-trading rule violation.sanfrantrader1.substack.com/p/topstep-review (opens in a new tab)2 Jul 2025
  11. Topstep announced the acquisition of The Futures Desk on 1 April 2026, folding its trader-education technology and co-founders Josh Schwartzberg and Brian Ford into TopstepX.www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/04/01/3266805/0/en/Topstep-Acquires-The-Futures-Desk-Doubling-Down-on-The-Ultimate-Trading-Experience.html (opens in a new tab)1 Apr 2026
